VC student accepts appointment to West Point

Nicholas Fink

Nicholas Fink, 17, the son of John and Erin Fink of Oil City, has accepted an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.

The announcement was made by U.S. Congressman Glenn Thompson (R-5th).

Fink is ranked second in his class of 18 at Venango Catholic High School in Oil City and has a grade point average of 3.978.

He has been class president for three consecutive years and is president of the National Honor Society. He took second place in both the Science Olympiad and the Math Competition at Clarion University.

Fink is a member of ski club, chess club, the debate team, the philosophy club, walking for fitness club, and weightlifting club, all at Venango Catholic. He participates in drama productions and was co-editor of the school newspaper.

Outside of school, Fink also worked 15 to 20 hours a week last year at Perpetual Powder Coating.

The senior is captain of the varsity golf team and earned varsity letters in golf and baseball in ninth through 12th grades. Fink has volunteered as a coach for Easter Seals Tball and for the "Lil' Dribblers" basketball program.

He has been an altar server for seven years and has volunteered for various school fund-raisers and at a local nursing home.

"One of the honors of serving the 5th District is having a role in helping outstanding young men and women apply to the service academies," Thompson said. "...I believe he will become an excellent officer and leader."

Thompson added, "Nicholas' family has a history of service that he seeks to follow. His goal of following the history of the academy with `duty, honor, country' is inspirational."

Fink's paternal grandparents are James and Cathy Fink of Franklin, and his maternal grandparents are Thomas and Faith Vickerson of Albany, N.Y.
