Vikings' Rynd named D-9 boys Player of the Year

SHIPPENVILLE — After leading District 9 in scoring for the third straight year, Venango Catholic senior Maxx Rynd was named the All American Awards & Engraving D9Sports.com District 9 Boys Basketball Player of the Year.

Joining Rynd as major award winners were North Clarion's Mitch Obenrader (Rookie of the Year) and St. Marys' Mark Guido (Coach of the Year).

Rynd led District 9 in scoring at 25.4 points per game while completing a doubledouble with 12.2 rebounds per game. He also added 6.8 assists and 3.3 steals per contest and finished his career tied for 12th in District 9 scoring with 1,749 career points.

Obenrader played a key role in helping North Clarion to the PIAA Class A playoffs by averaging 10.1 points, 4.8 rebounds. 3.8 assists and 1.8 steals per game for the Wolves.

Guido, in his second season, oversaw a remarkable one-year turnaround from 2-18 in 2010 to 17-8 this year and a District 9 Class AAA championship for the Dutch, their first since 2000.

In addition to the major awards, first-, second- and third-team All-District teams were also chosen.

In addition to Rynd on the first team were A-C Valley's Allan Eaton (23.9 ppg, 10.4 rpg; 1,559 career points), DuBois Central Catholic's Chris Marshall (16.5 ppg, 11.8 rpg; 1,412 career points), North Clarion's Jeremy Schmader (22.8 ppg, 6.1 rpg, 4.5 apg, 3.0 spg; 10th all-time leading scorer in District 9 history with 1,772 career points), Ridgway's Eric Matheson (16.8 ppg, 4.8 apg, 3.6 rpg, 2.1 spg) and Union's Brody Pollock (20.0 ppg).

The second team consisted of Brookville's Zane Hackett, Clarion-Limestone's Brandon Bell, Cranberry's Ryan Willison, Elk County Catholic's Darren Simons, Moniteau's Kyle Armagost and Smethport's Zach Smith.

The third team was Brockway's Nick Anderson, DuBois' Garret Peterson, Elk County Catholic's Ricky Pearsall, Moniteau's Zach Sloan, St. Marys' Justin Quiggle and Venango Catholic's Ben Guth.
