Vikings clinch KSAC golf title

ALEC THURAU

TITUSVILLE — Alec Thurau led Venango Catholic with a round of 39 to capture medalist honors as Venango Catholic defeated Keystone, 219-237, in the Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference finale for both schools.

Coupled with a Clarion loss to Cranberry, the Vikings earned their first conference title with a 9-1 record.

"I think what really makes it special is the freshmen just kept getting better," Venango Catholic coach Jim Hawkins said. "Thurau only had his second year of golf and he steadily improved and added a lot to the team. It was really rewarding to see the kids have that kind of effort."

Venango Catholic lost its first match of the year against Clarion, but reeled off nine-straight league victories.

Matt Kuhn followed with a 41 and Garrett Hawkins added a 42. Jonah Jones and Nathan Dudzic round out the scoring with a 48 and 49, respectively.

Beau Schettler carded a 42 to lead Keystone and Sam Gregory chipped in with a 44.
